The past 20 years, I've heard things like, "Don't put anything in your ear, smaller than your elbow." -seriously, how ridiculous is that? They invented Q-tips for a reason. BUT the problem is that, if a person has severe wax build-up, using a Q-tip can shove the wax further in, and cause more problems. AND some people let children get ahold of them, and they puncture their eardrums! THE POINT IS, IS TO BE VERY CAREFUL using them! Use them moist from water or alcohol, but NOT dripping wet, blot them first on a tissue or towel. USE VERY VERY SLOWLY! get clean tip for every time you go in. A good time to use is after a hot shower, where the steam has softened the ear wax. --ALL this, I told my teen son, just the other day........

Yes you can puncture your ear drum or shove the wax deeper into the canal. Your ears need a small amount of wax to help keep dirt and debris out of your ear canal. It constantly makes wax pushing out the old wax and replacing it with fresh wax. There is no need to clean the ear unless you have a buildup of wax and that would be taken care of at the doctors office.

Yes its bad to clean your ears with Q-tips. To clean your ears you would want to get an eyedropper and some hydrogen peroxide and drop the peroxide into your ear and allow it to bubble the wax loose and it will fall out , You can use Q-tips safely if you do not go in toward the ear canal.

Use a Qtip to clean the outer parts of your ears, but don't put it inside your ear hole.

It is bad to insert q-tip into ear cannal. Not only to you push wax back into ear you run the risk of rupturing your ear drum. Wax flows out of ear and when you use q-tip it pushes wax back and increases the chance of wax impaction.
It is ok to use them around the ear canal opening though.
They have a product called debrox which is good to remove wax. You can find it at any drug store. It is peroxide with oil and you put it in affected ear for 3 nights in a row and then rinse with bulb syringe. It is very effective.

doctors say it is the q-tip was intended to clean around the ear if you clean the inside of the ear it does get some of the wax off but it also pushes some of it in and it starts building up

Besides pushing ear wax up against the eardrum, q-tips also cause irritation to the canal and ear drum. This can lead to external ear infections. My husband is still recovering from these problems...the consequences of his aggressive ear cleaning with q-tips. We still don't know if he is going to recover the hearing he has lost from it.

Not if you're careful and just clean out the superficial excess wax. Don't go in too deeply or use a lot of force, this can damage sensitive areas and cause a high pitched ringing sensation in the ears.

It is bad b/c it pushes the wax farther into your ear and you could puncture your eardrum. I still use them though. I also put hydrogen peroxide in them, this works the best at getting all the was out.
The original use of Q-tips is to apply makeup, touch-up paint and stain on walls, cabinets, ect., clean musical intruments, apply creams and ointments, clean cuts, clean between toes, and care for newborn's umbilical cords.
