Many problems are caused by urban sprawl. My favorite (least favorite problem) problem is that what were once kept up neighborhoods fall into decay/ abandonment. And are eventually torn down as opposed to rehabbed/renovated. Then no one lives in those buildings. What a waste! Also, original dwellers move to the country to deplete the country side and animal habitat and turn that into a city. Then eventually urban sprawl takes place there and people move farther out into the country and the process continues.

Many reasons... environmental (land usage, raw material requirements, transportation), social, infrastructure, & more.
But my favorite argument is that it destroys the charm or appeal of downtowns & leads to drinking & driving. If people live downtown, there can be a good network of stores within walking distance. That also includes bars & restaurants, which are one of many essential aspects required for any city to be considered fun & desirable to visit. However, the drinking part A) creates drinking & driving or (hopefully) B) Prevents people from going downtown to have fun because of the drinking & driving issue.

Loss of farm land, which can affect an area's agricultural sector. Also, as urban areas increase, so does pollution in all of its forms. The ability of the Earth to compensate for the air pollution is reduced, as areas that were once carbon sinks become carbon producers.

massive over reliance on cars for transportation, adding greatly to global warming. Kills communties because people don't get to know their neighbors, they just want to get in their car and go somewhere else.
Mostly, it causes MASSIVE over use of automobiles which is faster and faster fueling global warming each and every year.
