MDCDXCIV
M = 1000, D = 500, C = 100, X = 10, V = 5, I = 1
Four of the same Roman numeral cannot be written consecutively, so a value like 4 has to be written IV, with the Roman numeral following the 1 subtracted from the 5.
So IV = 4 = 5 - 1.
By this same rule, CD = 400 = 500 - 100.
XC = 90 = 100 - 10.
M (1000) + D (500) + CD (400) + XC (90) + IV (4) = 1994.
So the long version of your answer is MDCDXCIV.
Of course, you could also add 1000 and 900 and 90 and 4, making MCMXCIV.

MCMXCIV
In Roman numerals, you are only allowed 3 identical symbols in a row. If you need 4 of something, you use the subtractive method. You place a lower value symbol to the left of a larger one. This indicates that the lower value is subtracted from the larger one. For example, if you need to write 4 you use IV (5-1), not IIII (1+1+1+1).
M=1000 CM= 900 (1000-100) XC=90 (100-10) IV=4 (5-1)
1000 + 900 + 90 + 4 = 1994
