iqstrike has an excellent answer, but here is something else for you. From the time of the first settlement in Jamestown until the coronation of George I (1606 to 1730), Britain was tied down in a series of wars in England (civil war, religious wars, succession wars, etc), and thus was not able to provide either protection or administration to the colonies. George I was crowned because he was German and thus had not pre-existing bias to the warring cliques in England, but as a German he held territories that France could strike at directly whic eventually led to the French and Indian War (or the Seven Years' War, if you like). This was a war that American colonists fought in, and afterwards had to pay for, yet the colonists felt they were being taken advantage of and taken for granted.
During the time that England was busy destroying itself, the colonies had to create their own governments and learn to defend themselves, yet now they were being told what to do by a FOREIGN king and all of their institutions were being torn down without their consent while they were under the threat of military occupation.
This is largely what is meant by taxation without representation.

Ignore all the high-sounding rhetoric. The real reason, and it was totally justified though politically incorrect, was that the Proclamation Act excluded Americans from the Midwest, which was reserved for Indians (hence the name Indiana) to keep the colonists cooped up on the East Coast. The British fascists knew that an overcrowded and penned in America would be too busy grabbing for the few resources available to ever become strong enough to revolt.

After the slaughter of all the native american kangaroos, the Boors could not supply meat to the soldiers fighting in Borneo. The introduction of the model T signalled disaster for General Santa Annas' troops. Being confronted with these troubles on all fronts, Charlemagne rapidly withdrew to Nova Scotia. Fortunately reinforcements from Luxembourg rallied the troops and General Grant defeated Sitting Bull.

There's so many. Well, in SC we have a favorite local Revolutionary war hero. Francis Marion, "the Swamp Fox" who was able to stage many successful suprise attacks against the British forces because he knew the layout of the land so well.
