If I've been out of college for 2 years, how long should I study before I take the GRE?

I only took College Algebra in college, and I'm horrible at math. I really want to schedule the test, I just need this advice first. Thanks!

I recommend waiting until you are comfortable with the test and especially the math material before taking it and not a moment before it. There is no set recommendation for this because it should be based on it because each one is personal. I know you are anxious to take the test, but no test is worth it unless you feel prepared in your own mind because you can draw a blank out of nervousness. Every site I have read recommends using a test preparation book, but there is software, too. Good luck!

I never took college algebra and I was horrible in math. I just studied and refreshed as much as I could from the study books. I got lucky; the math wasn't that hard on my test. You may never feel "comfortable" so just see if you can get through at least 50% of the practice tests with right answers.

It really depends on the school and admit requirements. I had to take it for entrace into the Ph.D. program at a state school & I haven't been in school for 10 years. That is just one part of your score for entrance, typically about 10%-15%. You just don't want to bomb. It also depends on your major. Engineer/science majors need to do better in math than the verbal. Education schools typically have lower expectations...just depends. Also, if you do poorly, you can retake. They will average your scores for admission requirements. Remember for the GRE it gets harder as you get more questions right. I got bogged down in geometry...I didn't remember much! :) As long as you remember basic albebra, it will be sufficient to get into an average school without studying. If anything, look over the cheat sheet of GRE vocabulary words. That will make a difference in the verbal just by studying those for a few days. Hope this helps.
