They called Truman "The Haberdasher from Missouri". He was a clothing store clerk that went broke. Eisenhower, of course, was a lifer in the military. But, before and after those two, bracketed in the 100 years of the 20th century we had nothing else but people with a background with easy wealth.

That's a little harsh. most of them were millionaires, but many of them were self made men. Roosevelt was nearly a poor house by the time he became president, and it was his wife's money they used to campaign. Lyndon Johnson, as I hear it was just a southern hick with a lot of influence...no one expected that he would become president.

The american public is very judgemental of the person they choose to lead them. They expect them to be well educated, well spoken, well mannered and a diplomat. Those things take extraordinary social skills, and more often than not, a top notch education. Boundbrook community college does not teach political science the same way harvard does. Although, apparently CCNY(the free city college in New York City), back in the 50's did. It was called the Poor Man's Harvard. My dad went there with Colin Powell and Andy Groves...who from humble beginnings went on to accomplish great things.

I am not at all surprised that the majority of the political leaders in our nations history are well educated as well as wealthy. The influence needed to persue even a local political career is vast. You might be interested to know that the mayor of New York City makes more money than the president of the united states.

I am certain President Truman was not a millionaire, either before or after he was in office. Wilson and Taft might not have been millionaires (simply because inflation had not kicked in yet) but they were certainly doing well. Jimmy Carter was a millionaire but because he still lived in a small town he gave the impression that he was not. I doubt Eisenhower or Nixon were millionaires when they entered office, but I believe both were when they left.
