Where does anybody get off thinking that mlk has the right or the privilage to have a memorial placed between 2 of our greatest presidents , he was nothing more than a activist , i think of a laundry list of others who would be in line in front of him who "were not" plagiarist , and who "did not" have ties to communist party leaders , i personally see this as a insult and a slap in the face of 2 of our countrys greatest leaders , i guess they will build a memorial to cindy sheehan next to the Washington Memorial

What I think that you reject is the way his image has been used to support ridiculously racist ideas like affirmative action and other things like that.

Cant agree more but:

MLK as an icon is being used to swing the racism pendulum to the other side of discrimination; however this was not his platform. Regardless of your own irritations about that mater the issues that were being discussed back then were VERY valid and MLK served as a pivotal role in that change.

Regardless of what you think of him as a speechwriter he was an amazing orator. He gave voice to a dominant feeling of blacks and motivated whites to do something. He united the movement of anti-segregation that was rampant during his lifetime. He argued that we should be judged on the content of our character not our color. No matter who said the words he used first, nobody listened to them until MLK said them.

Martin Luther King was an Icon. The fact that he was entirely uninventive in his material is not the reason history remembers him. The fact that his personal life was… lets say rocky has nothing to do with the validity of his movement. By that argument there has not been a president in some time that writes his owns speeches. What does that mean? Less that what you are inferring.

I'll finish by asking one question. Do you think the movement away from segregation (and violence against blacks) was good?

If you answer No then you have to give credit to MLK for being the pivotal role.

You are correct that Martin Luther King was only an activist. If they have to put up a memorial to him it should be erected in some special "activists only" park. His memorial could be put with memorials to people like John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and John Quincy Adams. After all they were nothing but activists.

Of course those people didn't have to have ties to communist leaders because main stream America recognized their right to live as free and equal citizens. Sadly, mainstream America did not recognize that status for black Americans. The communist party did. If you hold a man down he will take a hand up from whoeer offers it.

Sara E: Please think before you generalize that all southern people are like the questioner. I am a southernor, I am not a red neck and I do resent your implication.
Like it or not Martin Luther King led a movement that instilled black Americans with the heart, hope and courage to stand up and say we are human beings and we demand that we be treated as such, we are citizens and we demand the rights thereof. He used what tactics he had to use to lift up a subjugated people. As a white male I am proud of a nation that will build a memorial to a man that displayed the courage to stand up and give his life to see a great wrong made right.

And before you use the "nothing more than an activist" tag again keep in mind the number of great people over the ages that proudly bore that lable. Jesus Christ, Ghandi, Walensa, Pope John Paul.....

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a powerful man and usually a man with such power can be corrupted with violence. Note that he did not succumb to that level... on many occasions he actually turned the cheek. Comparing him (a man who not only fought for his own right, but for the rights of all african americans as well as other minorities) to a woman who lost her son in the war and (rightfully so...) demands answers, is a rather flimsy attempt to get your point across. But, while we are at it... let's talk about someone who has a holiday but truly does not deserve it... Columbus. Sure, he's history... but so are his vile antics.
But back to MLK, this man deserves whatever recognition and praise he gets... post-mortum of course... because what he did and what he stood for was one of the defining moments that altered the landscape of our Nations already shaky history.

1. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the greatist civil rights activists that ever walked this earth, if anyone deserves this memorial, he does
2. MLK was not a communist, he was a freedomist, if that makes any sense
call me white trash, call me a black sympathizer, whatever you want, but don't you dare trash the name of one of the few great men this world has seen just because he wasn't a president

You have no clue. Sure the presidents had the title but MLK did so much for this country that no title could capture it. You need to stop looking at the titles and look at what the person did. Of course he deserves it, if not more. Do your research. Look outside the box.

Not before they put The Good Reverend Jesse Jackson up there!!

This gripes my ***, too. So he had a dream. I did, too. I was riding a camel thru the desert, dropped a piece of paper, and jumped down to get it. My feet were burning and I looked down. A bunch of white lab rats were biting my feet.

Where's my damn monument?

I think you should lighten up. The man did a lot for this country. He had a dream. Do you? Maybe one day all the racism will be gone. I sure hope so.

You do have a point!!! If we are going to put activist monuments then does that mean they will put a monument of main leader of KKK? I doubt it . What about the leader of the black panthers? Very good point
