Levels of FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) are a good indicator of the state of your egg reserve. FSH is a hormone released by the pituitary gland to ripen and mature the egg. Levels tend to fluctuate on a monthly basis as perimenopause approaches, but there’s generally a window of opportunity at some point when your level will be low enough to start an IVF cycle. modifications to diet and acupuncture

High FSH levels mean egg quality is likely to be poor and fragile eggs may not be able to withstand the stress of IVF drugs. It could also mean that you haven’t ovulated and, though some women do go on to have a successful pregnancy using their own eggs, your clinic may recommend the use of donor eggs.

There’s currently no accepted, conventional treatment for raised FSH but here’s what you can do to help yourself:

Go onto a liver detox diet. Our resident nutritionist, Melanie Brown, will be able to talk you though how and why this can help.
Spend time relaxing and doing deep breathing. You might like to come into the clinic for a deep breathing (Qi gong) session with Chew Yeen Lawes, our resident midwife and martial arts trainer. TM (transcendental meditation) can also be very beneficial. Studies show that acupuncture can help to lower FSH. We treat a number of acu-points which are important for reproduction and hormone regulation.

Hi FSH would indicate menopause or peri menopause (unless you have had a hysterectomy). If it is causing you problems you would perhaps consider HRT. I have high FSH and it causes flushing and night sweats (yuk) - I am only 42 and am told this is rather young. high FSH and early menopause carry risk of osteoporosis in later life and therefore HRT may be a good option for you (though personally I am not going near it!)
