How do they relate? Are they direct competitors?

They are all different companies. IBM makes computers. Intel makes computer parts (which IBM may buy and use to put in the computers they make).

Apple makes their own computers, and are therefore competition to IBM (as well as Dell, HP and all other computer makers).

Microsoft creates software that makes the computers usefull. Nearly all computers that are not created by Apple, likely utilize a Microsoft Operating System (i.e. Windows XP). Microsoft also makes software that is compatible with the Operating System that Apple uses.
