Politicians from either party are looking out for themselves. They're not out to destroy the US, but they certainly aren't doing what we're deluded into thinking we pay them to do.

It's the nature of our "democracy" that we elect the best liars, panderers, manipulators, exploiters. They campaign on false pretences, true; but it's not that they do the opposite of what they say they will - it's that you never hear about the REAL agenda at all. They just LOVE it that we allow ourselves to be distracted by abortion and gay marriage and other nonsense non-issues while they auction our government off to the highest bidder.
