You can replace your Social Security card for free if it is lost or stolen. However, you are limited to three replacement cards in a year and 10 during your lifetime. Legal name changes and other exceptions do not count toward these limits. For example, changes in noncitizen status that require card updates may not count toward these limits. Also, you may not be affected by these limits if you can prove you need the card to prevent a significant hardship.

To get a replacement card:

Complete an Application For A Social Security Card (Form SS-5); and
Show us documents proving:
U.S. citizenship (or immigration status and work eligibility); and
Identity.
Take (or mail) your completed application and documents to your local Social Security office.
All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents.

For more information, see Documents You Need for a Social Security Card.

We will mail your number and card as soon as we have all of your information and have verified your documents. Keep your Social Security card in a safe place. Do not carry it with you.

First show proof you are a true citizen of the United States, not an illegal come over for hand-outs.

Ask the SS department I'm sure they will tell you what you need. I know but not going to put it here in a question/answer area.

Get up and call the department, stop depending on others here to do your work for you. :o)

What do you mean 'new'? If you were born here you don't have to show proof but if you weren't you have to become a citizen before you get a ss #. Assuming your a citizen, jsut go to the website, you should be able to order another one. A while back my purse was stolen with all my papers and that's what I did, they gave me no problems.

Just a shot in the dark here - how about calling your local Social Security Administration office and asking? Seems like rocket science I know but really it is easy!

A driver's license or identification card works in a pinch. You should look for your local Social Security office and give them a call.

A few months ago I lost my Soc. card and just went in. They were very helpful, they even filled out the paperwork for me.
