Mentally NO! Financially YES! I max out my 401K & have maxed out my Roth IRA every year! Not to mention life insurance! Did I mention I have been doing this since I was 22?

Not only becoming a widow. When over half the marriages end in divorce, women need to protect themselves. Women need to have a checking account they can call their own. The husband walks out and down's the checking account and savings account, you are left with nothing. Try getting it back in court takes at least a year to get back half if you are lucky. During the divorce I found out my ex had forged my name to six notes against our home for a total of $34,000, I have no idea what he spend it on. So if you think you know it all forget it you don't protect yourself.

This is a question that scares me sometimes since I am admittedly financially inept.
I love to spend money, but the idea of managing it is both scary and dull.
I should know better though, because both my mother and her mother became widowed at a young age. (30's and 50's) and managing without a husband was horrible for my grandmother, and just overwhelming for my mom.
I hate to think about it. but if it happens, I plan on getting another husband right away. I am scared of being alone, above all things.

I try to prepare for retirement, but NO, I am NOT ready! I am 43 years old and I am NOT ready! I think women make less them men as a general rule and a divorced woman like myself, I have no one to fall back on but myself. I have a fear of ending up homeless in the street.

IRA's are next appropriate to 401k's. you apart from would could make investments further quantities in regularly occurring (taxable) mutual money. the quantity mandatory is an entire different question. See retirement making plans calculators at constancy, forefront, or T Rowe value.

Yes I am. I put 8% towards my retirement every pay period and I have a life insurance policy on my husband.
