In my head, it's an end of year party (America only) where the pupils in the last year of term have a big party because they're leaving school. Sorry if this is way off but I've no idea what it is!!

Yes, it is usually at the end of the school year. But, it is a school dance mostly, and it's formal dress so it's exciteing for the students to get dressed up nice and dance with their boyfriends/girlfriends or maybe even start a new romance for those not previously enamored with someone. Good times, good times......

It's short for promenade which means walking out.

You're right that it's what Americans call their school parties. In the UK, it's the name of the raised pathway next to the sea and it's the name of a series of classical music concerts at the Albert Hall.

Yes, that's what it is in America. In London the proms are concerts I believe.

they have them in britain too, end of year or term, yeah its a party.

only known of one prom come to think of it, dont know if its a new thing here.
