I am 18 weeks pregnant and having serious trouble sleeping. I am trying not to lay on my back at night, and trying even harder to lay on my left side...but I am not comfortable, no matter how I lay. My back hurts, I put heat on it, my legs hurt I do the same. Nothing is helping. I dont think I slept more than an hour last night, and have to be at work all day. Also...I am very weak and dragging! I am actually sore all over my body like I worked out really hard. Any suggestions??

Well i am 36 weeks preggo now...i went through the exact thing you are...i never found anything the greatly helped or always helped but some things to try are:

warm bath before bed (some bubbles and candles may help you relax)

stretch right before sleeping
walk around before bed so your not so restless

use lots of pillows

dont be overly concerned about the position you lay in (i was like that too...and i think that alone kept me up more then the discomfort, besides i am 36 weeks now and i lay on either side i dont worry so much about the left side rule) your going to toss and turn so just get comfortable

believe it or not (and i hate sleeping up right normally) but propping pillows up and sleep sitting up some...it actually helped me to atleast fall asleep.

none of these worked everynight..so try each one each night till you find one that helps some...but i would reccomend a warm bath everynight to start with...

Good luck and sweet dreams!

I would make an appointment with my regular physician, not my OB/GYN...here is why....with my last pregnancy I was experiencing the same symptoms...all over body/muscle pain, insomnia and extreme fatigue...I thought it was because I was older (35) and pregnant, so I dismissed the symptoms and thought they would go away once I had the baby. When I had him, they not only did not go away, they got worse. After 3 months and getting to the point that I almost could not even walk, I decided that there was something going on other than pregnancy related problems. I saw my physician, got referred to a specialist and was diagnosed with fibromyalgia.

I had no idea what this was and apparently a lot of doctors don't know much about it either, so if your doctor can't seem to help you or wants to dismiss yur symptoms as pregnancy related without even trying to explore the possibility of FM further, then request he/she sends you to a doctor with more experience in the area. This condition is not terminal, but left untreated can be dibilitating. Also, this condition use to be listed as a rhuematic-type problem, but more and more research is pointing towards it being a neurological disorder instead.

To find out more about it, visit these various websites:
http://www.fmnetnews.com/pages/basics.html
http://www.niams.nih.gov/hi/topics/fibromyalgia/fffibro.htm
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/fibromyalgia/DS00079
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/tutorials/fibromyalgia/htm/_yes_75_no_0.htm

If you do seek medical advice regarding this condition, and it is found that you are not suffering from FM, here are some other ideas for dealing with your pain...get yourself a memory foam mattress topper (cheap at WalMart) and a body pillow....the memory foam with help relieve pressure on your joints & muscles. Slepp with the body pillow yucked between your knees...because your hips are spreading to accomondate the beautiful life growing inside you, your hips and knees flex differently than you are use to while you sleep. Putting the pillow between your knees will help this.

people say use a body pillow! but it doesnt work for me! people say try putting a pillow between your legs and one under your belly! but it doesnt work for me either! tell the dad to give you a good massage! but it only takes away the pain for a little bit! Try tyenol...but that also only takes the pain away for a little bit! I feel your pain! and trust me it only gets worse! I am 25 weeks pregnant. and i havent slept in days! not only does my back hurt, but my stomach hurts because all the pressure the baby puts on it. My tail bone even hurts! I feel like i've slept on concrete my body just aches! if you find anything that works for you let me know so i can try it!
