There isn't, nor ever has been, a Communist country - only feeble attempts by Communist politicians and governments. But while Capitalism still has a foothold, Communism could never occur.

The US trade embargo on Cuba exists because the US government under various Presidents don't like Cuba's regime under Fidel Castro and are waiting for him to die.

China no longer suffers any US embargo because they have embraced Capitalism with fervour and, if you compare whats going on in Gauntanamo Bay (which is on Cuban soil without permission from the Cuban government) with Chinas record on Human Rights, the US has a close ally in terms of treating people badly, unfairly and cruelly.

You have asked a good question which invokes a lot of history, politics, law and economics - well done.

The embargo isn't through it being a communist us of a, yet fairly for taking US interests in the course of the revolution. American investors lost very much of $ for this reason of the revolution. Cuba replaced into also an best chum with the Soviet Union in the course of the chilly warfare and had the flair to residing house missiles, for this reason the cuban missile disaster. China is an outstanding commerce partnier and shall we by no potential position an embargo on them our monetary loss might want to be too tremendous.

Because the Cuban expats in Miami lobby to maintain the embargo. The embargo was set to expire before 9/11 but Bush indicated that he would not sign a treasury bill that ended the embargo. Treasury was responsible for Customs and after 9/11 we needed Customs to be funded so the measure to eliminate the embargo was extricated from the bill to insure passage. BTW, every couple of years the UN condemns the embargo.

Cheers

Cuba doesn't have anything the politicians want, and the Cubans in the US are a very loud pressure group, particularly in Florida.

Cuban cigars are still enjoyed by the self-appointed political elite, but they didn't get where they are by obeying the law.

The Cuban "missile crisis" did have something to do with it. Did you know that there is no evidence of those missiles having been removed from Cuba? A couple of U-2 photographs of large shipping containers on the deck of a ship, nothing more. According to the Russians, the missiles are still there. They have probably been scavenged for parts and fuel by now, doubtful that more than a few could still be used.

The US haven't liked Castro ever since he took over Cuba and confiscated a lot of property from Americans and rich Cubans who fled to the US. They will keep up their mini war at least until the Castro family are out of power. The other reason is that if they normalised relations with Cuba, they'd have to give up their military base and concentration camp at Guantanamo Bay.

China's a different matter. The US can make money dealing with China.

The embargo of Cuba and not Red China shows the absolute hypocrisy of American foreign policy. If we lift the embargo on Cuba, and allow Americans to freely visit and mix with the Cuban people, everything would change. It has become a farce. Hell, we have dropped Vietnam from the "Do not trade with" list and that cost us 58,000 American lives!

End the embargo. Don't let the Cuban-American lobby dictate this. I see folks complaining about Israel's influence on the government. The Cuban American lobby is just the same.

The Cuban revolution took place to overthrow a right wing dictator puppet beholden to the United States. It was not intially communist, but fighting for the self-determination of the cuban people. Cuba was forced into the arms of the Soviet Union for econonomic reasons and driven to the left by a paranoid United States. It could have all been so different for those poor people who have suffered for decades under economic sanctions. The US cannot afford to fall out with China because it is bank-rolling its record debt by buying billions of dollars.

it all comes down to the Cuban Missile Crisis, October 1962.

you can read up on it here

im sure it will end though when Castro dies, the Americans will want to move back in and that will totally wreck the country.

Cuba is a beautiful country ive been there, but the people are very afraid to even talk about their 'government'

The principle of communism can never work, although the basis of it is equality ............ but i doubt Castro lives in a shack and earns an average 16 dollars a month

As far as I know, only the US has an embargo against Cuba. And it is political in nature. If your party wants to win Florida in the elections... you'd better vote to keep the embargo.

Because there is one very big difference between the two - one is a Communist state with no money and one is a Communist state with lots of money.

My parents were talking with some Americans whilst there on holiday and they said that Bush has done loan deals with China and now the US owes China some huge sum of money. I guess that is another reason why, if it is true.
