We are doing a play set in the late 50's early 60's and i need to know what type of clothes were worn then by refugees especially. Also there is an English woman in the play and she would have clothes from the late 1950 and is a teacher at the refugee camp. Thank you very much.

After Stalin's death, Eastern Europe was given a little taste of Western clothing. Unfortunately it was limited to main cities like Moscow where material could be purchased to make the clothes that were shown in the photographs in the very censored state magazines. Generally, throughout the whole of Eastern Europe the 50's were still very austere and the 'normal' clothing was of the type you still see today on TV, showing villages in Russia and Ukraine... the headscarf, 'pinafore and 'flower-power' dress. It certainly wasn't sexy or fashionable. Male fashion did not exist beyond a Sunday best suit (poorly made) and working clothes. If you really wish to know more, my wife is from the old soviet bloc and her mother is presently staying with us... please e-mail me

Not as old as you would think.

If you look at ANY pictures from WWII, you will see that they were not the "refugee", "covered in a shawl", hagared looking type of clothes.

The 50's were an era of re-birth, as there were no rations, no "huge" war, and people were finding themselves again.

IF you want an idea, look at the movie "Grease", or "M*A*S*H", or "Rebel Without a Cause", "Streetcar Named Desire".

This was also the era of James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball (and the "I Love Lucy" show), Elvis...
