You are right. The Gillan and Coverdale eras are the best ones. Particularly I prefer Ian Gillan. That voice is amazing!!!!

Magic {I know I'll be slated for this}, I hate 'Smoke on the Water'. Yes, it's true. Great riff, but the lyrics are just so dull... 'Black Night' was one of the first of their songs I heard, and I love it. I also like 'Mistreated', but not the other two. MQ : Random order :~ Child In Time Drifter Help! {cover} Shield Might Just Take Your Life Lazy Black Night Strange Kind of Woman River Deep, Mountain High {cover} Super Trouper Why Didn't Rosemary Hush {cover} Sail Away Soldier of Fortune Jam Stew Anyone's Daughter MQ2 : No fair! I like both, though I favour the Rod Evans / Ian Gillan eras of Deep Purple, and only like the Dio / Dougie White eras of Rainbow. And doing a quick tot-up, I have a total of about 40 songs by each band. but, based on which of the two I listen to the most, I'll take Rainbow :) BQ : No, I can not. BQ2 : Tired, p*ssed off at my ISP, relaxing with some Blues-Rock NP : 'On the Highway' ~ Stone the Crows

Gotta be Gillan for Deep Purple.

Mind you, his band (the imaginitively titled "Gillan") were not that great, whereas Coverdales band "Whitesnake" were definitely an improvement on his Purple days.

Mark II all the way!

Ian Gillan, in fact the only albums I like by the group feature this vocalist.

Gillan. What do you think about David Byron of Uriah Heep?

both times i've saw purple, ian was singing. pretty good voice even as he ages. coverdale bugs the hell out of me, especially that record he did with jimmy page. whitesnake were pretty lame too. ian's best work was singing on the original jesus christ superstar record though.
ritchie blackmore is also a far better guitarist than steve morse, the guy they use now. morse rewrote all of ritchie's great guitar riffs and totally hair rocked them out.
