Not at all! Teaching is a physically and intellectually challenging job, and most teachers are up to the task. Those who are not should be weeded out to seek employment elsewhere. There are many who "can't" who TRY to teach, but they "can't" do that either.

Can't what? If they can't do anything else, they surely can't teach. Those that can't.. work minimum wage jobs like Wal-Mart or Starbucks. (or are street bums and homeless).
Some of the best teachers come from the business world. Look at private schools. They don't only hire people with teaching degrees like public schools. Private schools usually hire the best at their subject (i.e.- an economist to teach Economics). Many people that leave the business world to teach do so because of family reasons (have kids they never see). Anyone who says that line is bitter because they are stuck in a dead-end mundane business job with no life.

No, its a stupid cliche. In my life I have known a lot of extremely capable teachers who probably could do anything, but preferred to teach simply because they loved teaching. At one time it was one of the few options open to women.
Of course there are bad teachers as well. It takes a lot of skill and talent to teach others. Thank goodness some people do love teaching.

Those who can't do what??? I agree with Jake- very offensive statement. My son is a third year PHD seeking Physics student who wants to teach-I am proud of him. He CAN and HAS done a lot more than most 24 yr olds. All the CRAP teachers put up with too??? Think about it.

No! Teaching is much more difficult than doing. To teach you must now what to do, how to do, and how to explain it in about 20 different ways so that everyone can understand.

Maybe at the university level.
Teaching is more about what people 'CAN':
Can you make people believe that they are capable?
Can you encourage?
Can you make the requirements transparent so learning is less complicated?
Can you plan, know the material, and demonstrate that by teaching to various ability levels?
Can you show teenagers respect to such an extent that they treat you and others respectfully?
Speaking of teenagers, are you skilled in conflict management?
Can you show empathy?
There are so many CANS that a good teacher must be able to do... and do so well that it looks effortless.
Those of us who CAN - well... we teach. ~ Andrea

Not necessarily. Many college professors have decades of experience in their respective fields, which allows them to provide a unique, "real life" perspective.

It seems that some teachers are full of advice but when looking at their lives, they've failed so much at "doing" you don't take their advice. The lessons they teach are factual and with rules (ie: math, english, etc.) But life has no real rules. The "doers" get down and dirty their hands and become street smart--survivors. Teachers would really fail on the streets.
