The Duleep Trophy competition was started by the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 1961-62.

It is named after Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji.

The original format was that five teams, drawn from the five zones, played each other on a knock-out basis. From the 1993-94 season however, the competition converted to a league format.

Lately, the Indian board has invited International A teams to participate. For instance Bangladesh A participated last year and Sri Lanka A is here this year. The idea is to provide a greater degree of competition into the tournament by bringing in overseas players. This of course, is great exposure to A teams too as the level of competition is fairly high for "A" teams.
