While it's possible for special software to recover some files (like documents, spreadsheets, music etc) you're not going to get 100% and you'll only get individual files- there's no restoring the system to it's original configuration with all the old settings once you're reformatted and reinstalled. Whatever files have already been overwritten during the reinstall of XP are gone.

Moreover, recovering data isn't something that a non computer-savvy person will be able to do, since it requires familiarity with partitioning and the physical process of pulling & reconnecting drives to a 2nd machine as katman mentioned. Often it requires playing with jumper settings and/or BIOS options, and possibly
attaching the drive via an external enclosure if there's a problem getting it recognized on the 2nd computer where you'll run the recovery software.

well...it can be recovered like the above poster said, but there is a requirement:

Don't overwrite the information
Don't use the scanner on the drive you want to recover from.

Best practice is by using the recovery software on another computer and attaching your formated drive to that computer.

You can try using R-Studio, O&O Recovery and GetDataBack for NTFS/FAT.
See which one works for you, Google for the download
