Here is a conclusion ive come up with. judging from the people ive run into who live in suburban communities with white picket fences and parents who make 250,000 dollars a year, ive come to notice that many of them glorify the life that ive lived and have seen and been a part of.
Im from Atlanta, have lived in a rough part of town, father is on drugs, have seen many of my friend die or go to prison, have seen their blood on the concrete pavement, have lived in an apartment where someone used to get shot everyday, went to an all black poor school, and used to almost go hungry when i was a kid because my mother couldnt afford to buy food sometimes.

This is kind of life that MTV, VH1, rap/pop magazines, teeny boppers, pop culture, and suburban kids seem to glorify nowadays. while they try to become a part of it, im trying to get out of it now by saving up money for college.

Black people who grow up rich arent any better, many of them try to act and talk the way we do, but havent (or couldnt) grow up the life that we have lived. All in all people, just be yourself.

It not that thepeople really want the rough life style at all. Its just a fad thing, like punk was in the 80's. You don't see punkers on the street now at 40 do you. Don't worry, these kids haven't a clue as to what life is about on the bad side of town. They will grow out of it.

first...VERY happy for you about college plans!!!
second...I am from an average income family in a small town and I haven't seen things you have but I do have friends now where I live that came from bad childhoods and because of that I have become a better person.
Understanding and caring instead of pop culture will change things for the better...and you will be one to make the most difference in other ppl since you are choosing the right path now.

Society & media play a big role in what is so called cool. I think you just need to keep yourself straight like you have & keep your head up & keep those goals in sight so you can be better than the hard things you had to go through. Soon one day those who front on who they are will have a reality check of their own. Good Luck to you.

Because they can't separate reality from make believe. They see all this stuff on television and hear it in music and think these people are so cool. I hate to sound like the moral majority, but so many people just want to be like these ganstas they see on television because they only see the "glamorous" side. People are just too easily brainwashed these days.

most people watch mtv and see all the rap stars doing drugs, having big houses and nice cars and want to be just like them and they think if they get into that life and pretend to be tough and a thug, they will have all of that

I agree with you on this. Let truth be truth, be who you are, don't compromise for the acceptance of others. If you do, then you find yourself wondering who you truly are later on down the road. I respect all races, cultures, creed, what ever it may be, and like you said, be who you are.

i live in the suburban neighborhood you described...and i know i definetly don't glorify the thug life or want anything to do with it. i dont watch MTV or listen to most radio stations because all they play is rap and hip hop, and i have no interest in that and i cant relate to it at all. no one else in my suburban neighborhood wants anything to do with "thug-life" either, i am not sure why you think we would.
