Definitely. The noise is dvd inside rotating very fast, or plastic gears in laser lens mechanism is gridning against each other. either way - dvd burners are under $40 now. Just get a new plextor burner and forget your worries.

Glad to see everyone in agreement here.

Your burner is an its' last legs. Suggest you start looking for a replacement. You'll find the prices for pretty good burners are now in the $50 to $75 range. You can spend more but I doubt you'll get any improvement compared to the lower priced units.

It has been my experience that once they start making a noise they are on their way out. I have had to replace CD/DVD drives in my 5 laptops a total of four times. I think they put cheap ones in the new comps. And very expensive if you didn't buy the extended warranty.
