The first books I ever read in Kindergarten were ones that included a mouse/rat named Sam, a snake, and something to do with a "mat". I've searched the Internet over for these books, but have not been able to come up with the author or anything.

This is strictly a guess, but I would think that these books are most likely a part of the school's reading curriculum--perhaps emphasizing phonics or sight reading or another 'trend' at the time in the reading community--as opposed to an 'actual' real series of books that one would have found in the store or library. I remember having dozens of small books each emphasizing a different vowel sound or consonant in kindergarten. Such as Matt the Rat. Pig in a Wig. etc.
