I travelled from Vlad to Moscow last autumn and had the most amazing few weeks ever. I didn't go on the Trans-Siberian express train. I went on an ordinary commuter train which cost me £80 for the whole journey but that was 3rd class (platzkartny in Russian) which is a dormitory carriage with absolutely no privacy). I would recommend you go 2nd class (coupe) as it is more comfortable but still sociable.

It is very safe indeed. I am an English girl who speaks good Russian and I was travelling alone and I felt completely safe at all times. You become a minor celebrity and people want to talk to you but it's fine. My big tip would be to learn Cyrillic before you go. Just enough so you can read basic signs and hold a basic conversations. Most Russians outside of Moscow and Petersburg don't speak English and speaking to the locals is what makes the journey so fantastic.

Take lots of food with you to share. Stick to bread, sausage, cheese, fruit and veg, rather than junk food as well as beer and vodka. Everyone shares their food and it's a great way to break the ice. Speaking of ice, autumn is a good time to go. Summer on the train is boiling and winter on the train is freezing, although of course winter is when it all looks beautiful. In autumn, there is some snow but the temperatures are nice (try September or October, not November).

Be nice to the provodnitsa (caretaker lady on the train). She can make or break your journey so try to charm her. Take your own toilet rolls and some wet wipes (Russian train toilets are better than people imagine but you still don't want to be in there too long).

Russians are my favourite people, so friendly and fun. Have a lovely time!
