I believe that it's a pre-set sentence according to what you did. Kidnapping will always get 30 years, murder always get the death penelty, rape always gets 30 years.

Mandatory sentencing is when a judge no longer is able to use their discretion to make decisions on appropriate punishment/sentencing for criminals.

It sounds like a good idea so that liberal judges don't let criminals get too light of sentences, but, as always, it gets out of hand and people are severely punished for hot-topic politically-incorrect crimes.

For example, drugs are a big political issue, so a kid with a few joints on him may get a more severe sentence than someone who mugs someone. DUIs are another big political issue, so a driver who is caught driving after a few beers, yet hasn't broken one single driving law is punished more severely than someone who actually causes an accident, damages property, and sends someone else to the hospital.

It's a political ploy to appease certain groups after certain public events or based on populist campaigns.

Like mandatory sentencing for DUIs to appease the MADD vote. It doesn't change anything, but politics is about appearance of caring.

That is a law that prescribes a particular sentence (or minimum sentence) for an offence and removes the judge's discretion to suspend, reduce or alter it.

crimes have specific sentences attched to them, rather than a judge giving you a sentence. some people think that this will stop the varying degrees of punishment being handed out atm.
