A striaght is a run of cards. There are many possiblities on making a straight, and they are as followings:
1) ace, 2, 3, 4, 5
2) 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6
3) 3,4,5,6,7
4) 4,5,6,7,8
5) 5,6,7,8,9
6) 6,7,8,9,10
7) 7,8,9,10,,jack
8) 8,9,10,,jack, queen
9) 9,10,jack,queen and king
10) 10, jack, queen, king, and Ace
From numbers 1-9 if any of these are all the same suit then you have a straight flush, and the last one number 10 if all five cards are the same suit--meaning clubs, diamonds, hearts, or spades--then you have a royal flush. The royal flush is also a straight flush because you have five card in a run. If the cards are not the same then it is a straight, but straights will get beaten by full houses, straight flushes, royal flushes, and four of a kinds.
If you have played rummy, it is the same as making runs but instead of a run of three it is a run of five.

If you are still confused go here http://www.theultimatepokerguide.com/article.php/texas-holdem-poker-game-rules this has a visual example of what makes a straight in hold em. Remember you are playing for the best five card hand, so the straight must be five cards in sequential order.

Five cards in order (e.g., 2-3-4-5-6 or 9-10-J-Q-K).
There is also a "straight flush" which is five cards of the same suit in order (e.g. 4â¥-5â¥-6â¥-7â¥-8â¥).

there are straights, straight flushes ,royal straight and a royal staight flush.a straight is 5 cards in sequence 1,2,3,4,5 of any suit(hearts, spades, clubs or diamonds).a straight flush is 5 cards in seqeunce but all have to be the same suit ,like 1,2,3,4,5 of hearts.a royal straight is the same concept(different suits) only with face cards, (ace, king, queen, jack, ten)and a royal straight flush is all the same suit with face cards
