Not a good idea ! If she wipes the hard drive clean she will have to start all over again, and it does'nt sound like she knows how to do that. With a clean drive she would have to reinstall everything ! The problem is, she does'nt know what the problem is. Cleaning the drive might not even help. And it's going to be alot of work to reinstall every program there is! Turn the computer off. Then wait a minute. Turn it back on and tap on the F8 key as it boots up. This will get you a black and white screen. Click where it says safe mode. Run the defrag program first. Then try to run the scan in safe mode. If this does'nt work, the drive itself maybe bad.

If she runs a scan and her computer shuts off, that is usually not good. Suggest her to try the scan in safe mode. To get there tap the F8 key after she turns her computer on. She will get multiple bootup options. Have her pick Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking Support. After the computer boots up have her run the scan.
If the same thing happens in safe mode, then she may need to take it to the computer guy.

you can wipe your drive clean by installing the windows disc and at one of the first prompts where it asks you which partition to put windows on there are some choices for deleting the partition, creating a new partition and than installing windows. Just know that when you wipe a drive you need to reinstall everything including windows and all the programs. Plus you will lose all data stored on the drive. Plus from the sound of the problem it is quite possible that the harddrive is bad and might need to be replaced.

If she has windows XP, boot from the OS disk and then tell it to format the harddrive. If the computer is a few years old, she may have dust blocking the cooling vents on the cpu fan, get a can of air and blow out the inside of the computer, usea flashlight to make sure the cpu fan is clean. I got a ton of yech when I did it. You might want to do it on the outside porch to avoid a mess.

Based on what you are saying. It's tough to determine what the problem is. You didn't say whether or not you're making use of High pace or dial or wi-fi. If you're making use of a wi-fi web, it might be sign barrier problem. If you're making use of High pace, it might be adware problem, if dial up, might be bandwidth problem. If you had been making use of you laptop adequate earlier than. I do not suppose it is laptop problem. Modem energy surge problem could also be viable.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
