1 Gal Shop Vac (Seriously!) Long Cord, cheap, and it does a better job than hand-held cleaners or most household vacs.

The Gtech carpet sweeper is fantastic for doing the stairs. It's a rechargable carpet sweeper rather than a vaccum but really lifts loads and is really really light. No need to worry about tripping over the cable either. Got it from Amazon for £50 but I see they are out of stock now. You might find one on ebay or another website.

i also have stairs and bought a litl dirt devil scorpion hand vac. it has hose attachment with a v-shaped end which works great in the corners, and also another broom like attachment which does the rest of steps . the cord is long enuff to do the whole set of steps without having to unplug and move . i love this litl vac and cost was $20 at walmart 3 years ago . (plus it works great in my car also )

how about one of those hand held vaccums (rechargeable portable vaccums) you can buy that are for small places..like the stairs.or the car ect...argos has them from £7.97 upwards..theres a black & decker one for £24.99 in argos catolougue page number 804. You could also buy a carpet sweeper (page 786) from £9.99 which are light & easy to use. Hope this helps, if all else fails use a dustpan & brush XX
