the who. they "defined" rock and roll. the beatles are more pop music than rock music.

what do you consider rock? are the beatles rock? The rolling stones? hard rock? classic rock? rock and roll?? its a very vague category. some would say the Beatles were the first all-boy band, so they may not be rock.. but getting back to the question
obviously the beatles are the most influencial, the Jimi Hendrix Experience probably the most ground breaking and Thin Lizzy the most underrated.. all in my opinion

From a historical standpoint, from their relevance in today's music, from the fact that their records still sell extremely well, and given that they influenced everyone and everything that has come since they burst on the scene, I would say that the best rock and roll outfits to date are (in no particular order)
Elvis Presley
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Given that Eric Clapton got his start as an offshoot of Led Zeppelin (he played with the Yardbirds), some may debate that Cream and/or Clapton himself belong in this group. I'm not so certain.

The Century meaning the LAST 100 Years or This Century since the Year 2000? THE BEATLES WIN HANDS DOWN ANY CENTURY, they started it all and NO ONE would be around if it wasn't for them, they made it what it is today.
