My belief is that it's the fact that as a dad, he knows he's not been as good a father as he'd like to have been. He's trying to find a way to "make it up" but knows he doesn't have much time left.
Most parents think that, at some time, they "missed the boat" (as it were) and know that they are growing old and may not have a chance to change it. I think that may be it.

evade responsibility I guess..isn't that why fathers leave their children...what else could it possibly be.
