I agree that's a bit contradictory....go figure!! The censors probably feel that kids will be more likely to smoke if they see Bond doing it and it looks cool. They're probably less likely to go out and gun someone down, although lately ya gotta wonder........

Because the new movie makers want to totally destroy the James Bond character..because they dont have a clue what has made Bond one of the best characters of all time!! They are ruining him ...with stupid changes like ...letting a blonde guy have the role, he falls in love instead of getting ALL the women, he's not allowed to smoke(why dont they stop him drinking martini's while they are at it), etc. I wish Sean Connery would go over and punch the director right in the mouth for what they are doing!

Originally (In the Ian Fleming novels and Connery films) Bond was at least a 2 pack a day smoker. In fact cigarettes are involved in some of the gadgets in the early films such as "You only live twice" Also the password and countersign for meeting new contacts in the first two films involved asking for a light.

As Bond became a major influence on young people it was deemed wise by the filmakers to have him a non-smoker.

First off, smoking was considered a lot more sexy back before we all had to start listening to old people coughing and hacking around their Laramie Lights. Today, many people just find cigarettes filthy. I know brown teeth turn me on!

Actually, though, one of the middle movies I believe with Roger Moore had to have the smoking warning in the opening credits because cigarettes played such a big part in it.
