My husband work with quite a few Indians and it is my understanding that they do. One of the guys that my husband works with states that his family in India looks down on him because he works a blue collar job (his brothers are doctors in India), even though he makes more money and lives in a more affluent area than they do. He has even bought his parents to the States and is taking care of them but his family in India thinks that he is beneath them.

Firstly, the 'caste' system is more a religious belief as opposed to a 'national' practice. Hindu's follow this belief, as many believe it to stem from their holy book the 'Bhagvad Gita'. India has many practicing religions, hinduism, bhudism, islam, christinaity, taoism, shintoism etc.
Hindu people believe in the caste system as it ties in with reincarnation and their belief you are who you are because of actions in your previous lives.
