I have a dear friend of the family (I'll call her Deborah) who does everything that she can to help my relatives and I with my 3 year-old little sister. She baby-sits willingly, buys gifts for my sister during birthdays and holidays and often calls to see about our well-being. The problem is that Deborah has the most obnoxious, spoiled, and ill-mannered 7 year-old grand daughter (Tara) who cannot differentiate adults from her peers. Quite often I have put Tara in check for speaking rudely to adults and my sister and even hitting her. And I've stopped myself from disciplining her on a few occasions because it's not my place. So because Deborah has given so much to my sister should I feel obligated to purchase her little brat a gift as well this year?

P.S.
I will definitely buy Deborah a Christmas gift but that grand daughter, arrrgh! If I ever come across a giant slingshot, I swear, Tara will be the first one I place into it!

Maybe you could get her a book about manners! :) Or one on how to get along with other kids? lol Maybe it would help.
Seriously, I have known kids like that and almost always they are bratty or mean because they have some serious problems with the adults in their lives and they act out their pain.
Good luck to you!

The child is not the one who helps your family, Deborah is.

Buy her a nice gift but do not buy for the child.

I would just so I wouldn't offend Deborah. But make it something little. Nothing extravagent. A little toy from the dollar store.

I don't think you're under any obligation to buy the child a gift. Just show your apprection to the grand mother, who is good to your family, put the child out of your mind completely.

i sure wouldn't. and i wouldn't feel bad about it either. just give deborah the gift at a time when the grand daughter isn't around.
