Hi, I'm the mother of twins and I hear these types of questions alot. Here's the facts:

1. Identical twins are from one fertilized egg that splits. It's a "random" act and all pregnancies have a 1 in 250 chance of being identical twins. Identical twins are not impacted by age, ethnicity, maternal age, or fertility drugs.

2. Fraternal twins occur when the woman produces two eggs in one cycle and both eggs are fertilized. The chance of fraternal twins increases with age (17% chance if over 45), ethnicity (more common in African Americans, less common in Asians and Hispanics), the use of fertilty drugs and/or family history.

3. Because it is up to the woman to produce two eggs only the family history of the female is relevant. They MYTH about skipping a generation is because family history only increases your chance of twins - it doesn't guarantee it. PLUS, if the father is the one with the "twins" gene then he cannot produce two eggs but his daughter could.

I hope this information helps. If you are a female fraternal twin then you definately have an increased chance of twins but are not guaranteed to have them.

Good luck!

Is There a "Twin Gene"?
Of the factors that influence multiple birth, there is only one that could be identified as genetic or explained by family history: hyper ovulation. Hyper ovulation is the tendency to release multiple eggs during ovulation, increasing the chances of conceiving dizygotic (or fraternal) twins. So, in families where the women have a gene for hyper ovulation, genetics would sufficiently explain an increased presence of fraternal twins.

However, only women ovulate. So the connection is only valid on the mother's side of the family. While men can carry the gene and pass it on to their daughters, a family history of twins doesn't make them any more likely to have twins themselves.

Fraternal twins "run in families" on the mother's side only, if she inherits the gene for hyper ovulation.

Do Twins Skip a Generation?

If your father was a twin, but you weren't, are you more likely to have twins? It's a common misconception that twins skip a generation in families. There is absolutely no evidence, other than circumstantial, that twins are more likely to occur every other generation. However, if you consider the influence of genetic hyper ovulation, this pattern could appear in families depending on whether their children were sons or daughters.

Anybody has the possibility to have twins, of course as many have said if it runs in the family it's more likely. Twins skipping a generation is a myth. It's just the luck of the draw and genetics. Simple as that.

I guess anything is possible in the medical world. All the fraternal twins in my family (and there are MANY), either had no children or only had singletons. It was the singletons who had the twins. And no generation was skipped in my family.

My grandma had twin siblings, my grandpa had twin siblings. Together, they had a pair of twins. My mom, a single, had 3 sets of twins.

you should go back in your family history and see if there are more twins, see how many generations twins have usually skipped and find a generally number. I know I am next in line my family skips 2 generations and I just happen to be in line for them. I pray I don't I want 2 children but I want to be pregnant twice.
