An idealist is not someone who has a lot of ideas. The dictionary defines three types of people as idealist. 1) an impractical person or someone who strives for themselves AND others to live up to perfectionist ideals; 2) someone with high ideals they strive to live by; and 3) idealistic philosophy which is that nothing really exists outside ones mind.

People who are idealistic (1 & 2 above) tend to be rigid, judgemental and uncompromising. They are glad to let anyone know how things SHOULD be, but they refuse to deal with how things ARE.

Teenagers are often labeled as idealistic because they still believe that everything in life is fair or should be fair. At some point, they are disillusioned and give up their idealistic views or learn to see all sides of an issue and that complete fairness is rarely possible.

The philosophical stand, that nothing exists except in ones mind is interesting and true to a point. However, if you and I both see a brick on the sidewalk and we agree it is a brick and we ask all who go by and they say its a brick we have taken the idea from our minds, put it with others and made a decision or agreement that in reality it is a brick...so it no longer exists in just our own mind.

I think it's a good quality. It's a fire that should not go out inside a person but unfortunately does most of the time. Maybe it's not always practical but what idealists are practical?

Life does have a way of beating the idealism out of a person though......then they end up saying "I used to be idealistic but now I'm in touch with reality, dammit I'm a realist!" lol.

There seems to be a fine line between realism and idealism. Maybe we can still dream and have high aspirations for ourselves and for this world, but also accept things as they turn out. Humans will mostly disappoint.

but hopefully a person never stops dreaming......

Ok Idealistic is really misunderstood, that is something that not even the greater philosophers could achieve at full time. Is our nature to be Realistic. And maybe a few moments of the day we are idealistic. So We Are Real People..

Being idealistic is not about what you want at all, but about what you think is right.
The sad thing is that most people seem to think that being idealistic is the same as being naive and unrealistic. I used to be very idealistic but lost my ideals due to that kind of feedback from my environment. We should encourage idealism instead of dismissing it as teenagers' sillyness!

1. Idealism is only good if it yields tangibly good results.

2. Idealism coupled with a good grasp of reality has rewarded many creative people to persist and follow through with brilliant ideas (i.e. inventors, scientists, music, math, etc.).

3. Wayward idealism can confuse people from recognizing reality. Many people do foolish things, or give up on good people, or activities, because perfection is lacking. Nothing, nor anyone lives up to their impossibly high pedistal reserved for Gods or Goddesses. Certain jobs are beneath them.

Good Luck and Warm Regards.

People tell me that I am because I have ideals about what I want in my life, and won't settle for less. I don't see anything wrong with it. I've seen too many miserable people due to the fact that they settled for less than they wanted.
