If you are well prepared, know coping techniques and are well supported you can do it.

The last part of my labors was the hardest and it didn't really last that long. (Transition with #1 and #2 and pushing out the shoulders with #2 and #3.) The worst part is only a matter of minutes long. The contractions aren't too bad and you get a break to recover between them. If you can labor with your bag of water intact that makes things much easier. And stay active...up and moving around walking, squatting, dancing, etc. Being in a warm birth tub helps tons too.

Read the book "The Birth Partner" by Simkin and "Birthing From Within" by England.

I can't say I had no labor pains. But they were certainly bearable. With my first I had stadol which I consider a drug, but the nurse told me it didn't count because it is a muscle relaxer not a pain killer. With my second I didn't have any drugs at all. I never wanted to have an epidural I was really more afraid of having the epidural than I was of having the baby, but I would never say that no one should have one. I think the recovery is easier if you don't have drugs, but that is just my experience. I would say that I had fairly easy deliveries with both of my children. I think I only had to push once or twice with each one, but I have known people who had harder deliveries.

If you are having a baby, my advise to you is just try to relax. It will be hard, but you can do it. It won't be unbearable and even if you think it is at the time, once your baby is here all of the hard work will be worth it. Don't spend your time listening to all the people who have horror stories about how bad it was. And if you want to have an epidural, just talk to your doctor. They know what to do so that you will have the safest delivery possible for you and your baby.

Yes! I had the contractions that were uncomfortable, but not at all painful. And trust me, I'm a baby when it comes to pain! Before labor and delivery I had a pain in my back the week before, and the week I had my baby. It was like a constant thing, and that actually hurt sometimes. But actually going through the process of having my baby was not painful at all. I had no drugs, unless they slipped me something I didn't know about!

ive had two boys, and i never used pain meds...with either of them. I had very very fast labor. with my youngest i went in for a regular checkup and i told him the night before i was having contractions and i asked him to check me, so he did and sure enough i was already a 5 and he told me to get to the hos....2 hours later i was holding my son :). My first son i was on bed rest for the last month in the hos. and the most pain i had was a little bit of back labor, but once they broke my water it was a matter of 15 mins and there was my son......:) GOODLUCK....Its not that bad, just keep in mind what your about to have and the beautiful baby you will see soon!!! I dont think pain meds are safe for unborn babies. I want my child to have their own reaction, not be drugged
