I have a 10 gallon tank with 4 goldfish in it. I change the filter once a month, but still have a problem with green algae covering everything, it needs to be basically cleaned and scrubbed every month. Any help? Can I get an algae eating fish? Its a huge job.

Since your tank is already very overstocked I wouldn't add any other fish in there. Goldfish need a minimum of 10 gallons each and unless you either get a bigger tank or return 3 of the fish the algae will be the least of your problems. If you have your tank near a window then move it and cut down on the time your have the light on. Having too many fish in there is actually making the algae grow more too since the algae has more food from the fishes waste.

Goldfish are dirty, and their tanks tend to be dirty as well. They put off a lot of ammonia, so your algae eater may die from the water quality. If you want to try anyway, get a plecostamus- they are large, effective cleaner fish, and they are not as sensitive as otocinclus fish or chinese algae eaters.

I would suggest you try an under-gravel filter as well as the regular filter, to help control the excess gunk in the water and gravel.

There are magnetic scrub spunges that hold on to the side of the glass and all you have to do is move it around the glass once a day and it will hlep with keeping the alge down.

less light and less food will do the trick for you, if it is growing algae is because you are overfeeding and there is tooo much light directly hitting the tank, remember that you are supposed to change 25% of the water every week.

Make sure it's not in direct sunlight.
Only turn the hood light on for 4-6 hrs. per day.
Algae eating fish can help, but often grow to huge proportions.
