I have some simple patterns on my website for free. I would suggest the hair worms for a beginner, slight errors in stitching will not effect the over all look by much. They use the basic stitches of chain, slip stitch, half-double crochets, double crochets.
Welcome to the addictive world of crochet!!

there are a lot of free patterns at www.lionbrand.com, there are also free patterns at www.bernat.com, and bevscountrycottage.com, and coatsandclark.com, these should keep you busy, but if you want more use your search engine and search for free crochet patterns :)
