It started in the early 1980"s with a pop song "Valley Girl" by Moon Unit Zappa.
It grew into a HUGE cultural phenominon and stuck...forever.

That's a stereotype. I'm American and I never use the word 'like' in the context you stated.

Your post is an example of why I hate stereotyping beliefs so much. You just took every person in the entire North American continent and attempted to label them by saying that we who live on this continent use the word 'like' repeatedly. This is how stereotypes continue to harm us as people. Don't trust that person over there - he's wearing a turban, so he must be a terrorist! Stay away from that person over there, he's black so he will probably try to rob you. Be careful when you visit California - everyone there is high on drugs! The list goes on and on and on.

I am so tired of stereotypes!! Thank you for reminding me why.

All Americans and Canadians don't abuse the word "like." It is usually in the teen crowd where you'll find such repetitive use of the word. They haven't learned to go beyond certain English obstacles to better declare their intentions.

Another misused word is OK or okay. Why it is used in the beginning of every sentence is beyond me.

You see this in the younger people who mimic others in a sheep like manner. And yes that does make them appear to have a mental impairment.

I don't LIKE do it but LIKE I hear lots of younger kids LIKE doing it LIKE all of the time. (ha ha)

I think they think they are being cool? It's kind of a spin off on the whole "valley girl" thing. I find it incredibly annoying.

Blame it on hollywood. They promoted the idea of being stupid and clueless as being cool. So sad. Apparently being stupid sells.
