The length of most pregnancies is 266 days from conception. The due date is worked out by adding 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of your last period. (So pregnancies are longer than 9 months!!)
By averaging it out, this assumes that you have conceived exactly 14 days after the first day of your last period, about when most women ovulate.
Seeing as periods aren't always reliable and regular, doctors can get better estimations on the week of pregnancy/ age of the foetus as you go along by measuring and assessing the bub on the ultrasounds. I'm told the 12 week is usually the most accurate though they will measure again at 20 and again if you have another ultrasound.
Hope this helps!

Day of conception would be the best way, but there is really no way to know for sure whether you conceived Monday or Thursday of the week.. So they usually take the missed period date and go from there. Now when you have your first ultrasound the dates will generally change when the dr gets the notice of the size of the fetus.. So don't put any bets down on the first date you receive from the dr.. You'll generally loose.... Good Luck.. Any by the way there is No dumb questions except the ones NOT asked.....

When you are pregnant, doctors start counting your pregnancy weeks by the first day of your last period. It sounds strange that you are pregnant longer than you actually conceived. However, since most women have different cycles and ovulate at different times, it's hard to pinpoint when conception actually takes place, so it's easier to just go by the date of your lmp.

your actual pregnancy starts on the day of conception, which is the same day when the sperm and egg fuse. normally it happens on the 14th or 15th day from the first day of your period, which are the most fertile days, but it can happen any other time too.

You start counting from the day your last period starts. I still don't quite understand it, but as I am only 12 weeks, im going through all that now.
