These ideas are some from gifts my husband has given me, or I have heard of from other women, or things that I want :) So maybe they will help you imagine what would work for you! :) This is kinda fun!! lol
A ticket for a weekend for two at a romantic Bed and Breakfast
A check for her to use for her - only her - for personal things and clothes.
I would love very very nice pajamas with a matching robe (but if she is a mother with young kids she probably would want something more practical)
jewelry - the best, of course, or the best that you can afford.
a jewelry cabinet - they are the big ones that are like mini dressers - the run from 99. to over 400. It holds alot of jewelry!
A special piece of furniture - an antique rocker, antique hope chest - I would personally love it if he bought something from an antique store but she might prefer new things.
whatever her hobby might be - give her somethign that is really cool in her realm of hobbies - like very nice easel for painting, or new oil paints and expensive sable brushes, or waterpaints, or a gift certificate for her favorite hobby store..... this would work for me but not all women and you would know if it would work for your wife!
plane tickets to a warm beautiful place for a vacation for the two of you for sometime in January! wow -THAT would be cool!
I know that I buy myself stuff through out the year but when Christmas comes - I want something I wouldn't normally buy myself, something seen as extravagant, something that makes me feel like I am really special to the person that bought it for me.
A special gift from an antique store just melts my heart. That means that it is more than likely one of a kind and really specially chosen for me. But if she doesn't have those same feelings then she might think it's junk and that you were cheap! yikes!
Another thing is if she has shown any interest - you could call your local university and see if the adult ed classes are having dancing lessons and you could sign you and her up for a few weeks of dancing classes. The classes all over the U.S. are filling up with people who have never danced before who want to learn. My husband and I went last summer and while we probably flunked the classes, we laughed the whole time we were in the class and had a great time! It was a lot of fun!
You can also ask a female relative or one of your wife's best friends what she might be wanting and what they think. Not knowing your wife makes it hard for me to answer, but on the other hand I am telling you things that might be new and different, too. :)
Very best of luck to you and your wife is really lucky to have a thoughtful (and early!) husband!!

Last year my husband gave me gold hoop earrings they were wrapped inside a nice but medium size jewelry box, I liked that. I also like to bake and cook so things like silpat baking sheets are good and if she's into making deserts maybe she'd like a kitchenaid mixer? But if your concerned with making her happy and getting something you know she'll like and would of picked for herself how about getting her to fill out a wish site? Check out the link below. My in-laws are pretty straight forward when it comes to gift giving they don't seem to like the guess work (unlike my own family) so they just ask each other for Christmas the questions start around Thanksgiving and we just give a variety of ideas on a list and everybody kind of collaborates and talks through the season that way no duplicates. But since there all straight forward and stuff now we're using this web site too. Anyway good luck and happy holidays.

OK well, I love diamonds, and at any jewelry store you can find those 3 pendant diamond necklaces. they are so beautiful. you can give it to her in a very sweet way. like hide the present in the tree and make her go on a Christmas hunt. or while she is opening it tell her how much you love her. definitely do not keep it in the same box it comes in because she will know. good luck
