For increased surface area for cerebral functions (whatever they are). I personally believe that at some point early in our evolution we used our brains a lot LOT more than we do now (80-90% vs. 4%) for telekinesis, telepathy, be able to perceive more than 3 dimensions...and all sorts of things...even to ascend to a higher plane of existence...
But we seem to have lost that ability...(or been forced to forget??)

Convoluted Brain

Basically it is so that the cerebral volume is small. Try this : Take a piece of paper, crumple it, and then straighten it out again. It is almost impossible to make it the same area as before; it will always be less. Similarly, the brain surface being "crumpled" allows it to take up less space while having an equal amount of functionality.

Hope I helped.

The brain is folded into our skull to preserve space, thus creating the grooves and ridges that are visible on the surface.

Many blood vessels are of the surface of the brain. And the cerebrospinal fuild is filtered in those convolutions. The nutrients and oxygen go in the cerebrospinal fluid and the CO2 and all the "waste" go back in the blood stream.

Lilith is correct.
