Only if you put your face too close to them - the darting movements of the iris look like a nice active bug, so a mantis might try to grab your eye and eat it.

For the rest of your body, no they CAN'T hurt you pretty badly! The worst you'll get is a chew-mark, which someone mentioned - that's a bit of a shock, and once the mantis starts chewing there's a limit to what you can do to stop them without injuring them! They don't chew for long, even if you don't persuade them to let go, and while they're standing back and munching on your skin you can extricate yourself from the situation and watch as you start to bleed slightly..!!

The claws do nothing much but scratch, so that's even LESS severe..!

So, to put it in a nutshell, if you don't put your FACE near them they can't hurt you badly.

Don't let them fool you! I used to catch (and release) them when I was younger and I got one MONSTER one that decided to chow down on my finger. Ripped me a nice hole with a good bit of blood and pain -- but I caught it anyway! HAH!!

I never heard of that. We used to catch them when we were young.
