I believe that definition is the essence of what we know of something. If we know something well enough, we must be able to define it. In any case, an attempt to define does improve our knowledge about the object we try to define. Let me therefore try to define love.
Love is the state of mind where the boundary around oneself is extended to include the beloved also within it in a seamless manner, thereby bringing into being a combined self, such that the beloved gets entitled to the same privacy, ownership and importance as self.

It is always difficult to describe or define a spiritual substance using worldly, material words, but when you feel that you would lay down your life without a second thought, have difficulty breathing, and can't stop tears, then you know that your heart couldn't feel any more love than it does. The power of love is unparalleled by anything else.

Because love is an idea(or feeling) and not an object it cannot be defined. However, like any other feeling it is recognized and shown to be true by the "fruit" of it. (The "fruit" concept: Anger is recognized as genuine when someone punches you, then you call them a b*tch, etc...). A relatively accurate conception of love can be found in the bible: try 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

when you define love this is when you have experienced it...its with you in your heart..a feeling that can be spoken..and i think when you describe love this is in the stage of being loved..the spoken love is more intense than you think..even if you are someone like me who cant express you self much..someone your mind has conjoined all the feelings for...you realize what has love done to you...when you are with your lover..its the only thing in your mind..that just doesn't seem to vanish away in you conscious mind
well all in all i think defining love is much easier than describing it as you need to capture the words to explain all the chemicals and the sensations you feel

I think love has no perfect definition or it can't be described completely but as much as I can understand about love, it has two important components - belongingness and devotion.

Love, whether it be platonic or romantic love, is knowing that you would take care of that other persons needs over your own, even if it may hurt you.
Or as Bob Dylan put it, "you are dearer to me than myself."

Love is when the most important thing to you is to make that other person happy and be sure they are safe.
