Ruminants, such as cows, can digest cellulose, the major ingredient in things like grass and other plant matter, while we cannot. Cellulose is much like starch, except that it has a different structure of linkage between the sugar units (a 'beta' instead of an 'alpha' linkage.) So basically, it is sort of like giving a human a huge room full of carbs and all the time in the world to eat it...no wonder they get so big! (Of course, they'd need other nutrients, which could be found in grass or other plants--minerals, vitamins, and the like. I also believe they are fed certain types of grain to supplement the grass.)

they dont get big BY eating grass - they are big BECAUSE they eat grass, the stomachs of the large animals have to be large ergo the rest of the animal is large too ( you need a lot of blood to feed lots of stomach cells so you need large hearts to pump the blood hence you need large lungs to get the oxygen to fuel the heart etc etc...)

Not all animals get big just eating grass...

I get fat eating junk food and indian/chinese takeaways, as well as both smoking and eating lots of grass!

There's a lot of grass out there and they are greedy animals. Enough said

They have the enzymes for the necessary cellulose digestion which we don`t have.
So for cows, eating a lot of grass is like for as eating a lot of chips!

maybe they extract hidden minerals and vitamins in it or something, but that's a good question, i have a guinea pig that's about as big as a dog, and he eats grass veg and fruit.
