I have no problems feeding with my flat nipples but I need to express milk for cerial and other reasons. I have tried two inexpensive breast pumps one manual and the other electric and I can have it on for 30 min and get nothing. When I self express I get milk but it takes for ever. I really can not afford any nice pump[s $100 or more and I live in a small town were my hospital does not rent pumps. Any Ideas on how I could get a pump to work? I have even tried to get the flow going by having the baby nurse for a while then pump, no luck.
My baby is 4 months old and my milk supply is very good and strong.

it probably doesn't have anything to do with your nipples. it is either your pump or the fact that you just do not produce for the pump. this is the case for many women. i would guess that it is this "performance anxiety" that is the reason you aren't getting anything out when you pump. try hand expressing (or pumping) one breast while the baby nurses from the other. good luck!

Great ideas from the previous poster. Unfortunately, there is a huge difference between the cheap and expensive pumps. I have used a Medela electric and an Avent manual and had sucess. Then I bought a cheap manual and it was terrible! It was so hard to get anything.

So, I do think that there are things you can try as the pp suggested, but it still might be your pump. :-( Good for you though for giving your baby the best- even if it means having the challenge of pumping!

Avent Isis is a good manual pump.

Have you tried using heat and massaging your breasts prior to pumping?

Have you tried baby nursing on one side while you pump on the other side at the same time?

Have you checked to make sure the pump parts are all connected correctly?

Is the horn large enough for your nipple? You want to see some of the areola being pulled into the horn when the suction is on.

Have you tried hand expressing or pumping after a hot shower?

I find it difficult to let down to a pump as well. You might want to look online for a good deal on a better pump. You can buy the pump used and replace all the tubing and parts for pretty cheap.
