Great Q, and in fact a very serious one. I'm reminded of an old movie, (Sci Fi???) perhaps obscure, where people are in a museum and someone,,, likely a child, sees a minature tree in a glass case, and asks what it is.

The issues certainly demand that as we expand the population exponentially, we use up available resources, often to the point of NONE LEFT. It's the nature of the species.

It also then relates to the fact that we must continue to find alternatives, which uses other resources, which depletes them, which causes the search to go on.

Certainly New Growth Forests, commercially owned, are a fact, and for the purpose of renewing supply, as demand over takes it, but that may in fact be the housing/building material of the 2050 Decade?

It's unlikey we'll keep our population in check, and Medical Science is helping in that effort, in prolonging what life already exists. It's also likely that we'll become a concentrated species, living "communally" one atop another. That has it's own negative effects. For every dwelling,,,be it single family or multi use High Rise,,,,even without the use of a single tree in construction, the site has to be placed somewhere,,,often at the expense of trees.

I'm not strictly a tree hugger, but it saddens me that we are basically a "throw away" society. I suggest take some pictures of trees, so you'll have them 20 or more years from now, as you gaze across a concrete, steel, and glass landscape.

I'd say we have quite a few years before that question is a reality. Tree populations have increased in the past few decades and, while there's still about 25% fewer trees than we had in the 1600s, there's still tons left. The numbers are actually on the upswing because paper manufacturers and lumber mills are planting new trees so they have something to harvest in the future, making them more like "tree farmers" than just "tree cutters".

samfd2001 is correct that the wildfires which strike on the west coast every year are made worse by laws which prevent the thinning of forests. Fires are fueled by the dense growth. In a 100% natural world, forest fires have a mostly positive effect in the clearing of deadwood making way for new growth. But in our civilized world they also destroy homes and kill anyone caught in their paths.

LOL! Don't worry about it! We have TOO many trees. The moronic US Forest Service has let our forests become overrun with trees and here in the western US the forests burn every year because they are not thinned out and it causes a lot of problems not to mention loss of life and property.

Never. Today, the U.S. has about the same amount of forestland as it did in 1920, despite a 165 percent increase in population. Forest growth has continually exceeded harvest since the 1940s, and today, growth exceeds harvest by 47 percent. Furthermore, if we follow suit with the Europeans, our population will eventually begin to decline.

I sure am glad you feel the way you do about over population. At least I am assured in knowing you are the last. You sound like either a very bitter, angry person or a complete nut-case. In either case its good to know you wont' be breeding.
