Affirmative Action is simply racism. People are treated differently based upon the color of their skin. MLK said that he'd rather have his children judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin.
Democrats gave us Jim Crow about 50 years ago, and now they've given us more race-based laws. The only difference is who gains the advantage. Republicans had to end slavery, end Jim Crow, and hopefully will soon end this travesty of justice.
Even Sandra Day O'Connor, in her deciding opinion on the Michigan Law School policy, stated that she hoped the policy would be unneccessary in 25 years.. which seems to be an admission of just how wrong Affirmative Action is... yet she still was cowardly enough to support it. Shameful.
Another minor point: if those who could gain entry to a certain college are nonetheless given a chance to compete, the odds are that they will be stuck at the bottom of their class. (If they weren't successful on their entrance exams or HS grades, the odds are pretty good that they will not magically become successful at the university level... it CAN happen, but it isn't likely.) AA merely continues to keep minorities down by making it more likely that they will be at the bottom of the lists at those schools.

Dr. King envisioned an America where all men, regardless of color, were equal. Affirmative action favored blacks and Hispanics only and gave them points that white people didn't get to move them to the front of the line thus passing up more qualified people. If you are given something because of the color of your skin, you don't appreciate it as much as if you actually earned it. It is a racially biased program to benefit people of color regardless of how much they actually worked for it. It promotes laziness too, which in the job market, effects employers. This is not a program that best represents what America is really all about. It is another government mandated control over our lives, which is actually taking away our freedom.
My opinion!

Affirmative Action, by benefitting some people based on their pigmentation or sex organs, only entrenched divisiveness between people. Double standards are inherently divisive, and a severe cause of friction between the groups.
It is contrary to every principle this nation was founded upon.
Yes there was discrimination, but it can't be undone, and its effects cannot be fixed by discriminating in the opposite direction. It can only be fixed by elimination of all discrimination.

IT benefits no one. If someone is awarded a job that they are under qualified for just because of there race, then the job will not be done right. Then the company suffers. The person that got the job looks like a underachiever. The example I would state is the point system used by the state of IL for advancement in jobs. (state level)
1 point for each year of collage
1 point for each year of service
1 point for each year of military service
1 to 5 points by job performance
2 points if the applicant is a minority. ( very unfair)
So I think that we all suffer in the end.
