awww, that's cute ^_^
no, no king was burried under the sphinx.
The sphinx is a memorial, or a statue of one important king if you will.. to comemorate his memory (I sadly don't recall the name of that specific king). It's been built as a resemblence of wisdom, power and control of that great king.
It's built as a legendary animal: usually for Egyptians it used to be a body of a lion and the head of a man ( the great king in the case of the Sphinx of Giza) but when the Greek and Pharoanic cultures mixed, the creature had wings, I have no idea why ^_^
The ones with kings buried beneath them are the pyramids, each is a great tomb for a great Pharoanic king.. since they belived in afterdeath, they buried him in a well-protected and also dazzelingly well-aerated room with his gold (which was stolen afterwards) and the rest of his belongings in other rooms. One room has been discovered but not yet accessed in the largest of the three pyramids of Giza .. the reason is that the only passage into this room is a very narrow passage wide enough to fit someone's arm yet much longer.. they built a robot to get it through there but it got stuck. Egyptian Egyptologist Zahi Hawwass and his crew are still working on it =)
Here, this link might give you more info about it:
http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/The+sphinx
and btw, they say there are a few secret passages in it but no one knows for sure.. they doubt it because the Sphinx wasn't built out of blocks, but was carved from a huge stone. ^_^
Hope I've been of help..

Many people in history tried finding tombs and treasures under the sphinx, but no luck so far, even current scientests have not had any luck with modern equipment.
I actualy live very close to the area and have visited it numerous times since childhood
In ancient Egypt, sphinxes were statues representing deities, with the body of a lion and the head of some other animal or of man, frequently a likeness of the king. The most famous of all Egyptian sphinxes is the Great Sphinx of Giza, near the pyramids. Dating from around 2500 bc, the Great Sphinx is about 20 m (about 66 ft) high and about 73 m (about 240 ft) long.

Hi Shirley,,,
I have been to Cairo quite a number of times and the Sphinx is next to the 3 pyramids...
True they found a underground room benith the Sphinx but there was no tomb... it was only a couple of years ago it was excavated and they found nothing.... as far as i know...
If your grandson ever gets the chance,,i was really impressed with the Egyptian museum in Cairo, and the pyramids are magnificent... the last of the ancient wonders of the world.... The bottom blocks are at least 7 ft by 7 ft,, or bigger,,,,,
Good luck
