Wizard Magazine actually published a list if the Top 100 stories of all time. There's obviously too many books to list here, so I've attached the link below. You know your friend better than anyone else on this board, so you should be able to find something interesting listed.

FYI, I'm quite partial to Iron Man "Armor Wars": he discovers that his technology has been stolen, so he goes around kicking every armored hero and villian's butt to get his technology back. In the end, he gets kicked out of the Avengers for going rogue. "Weapon X" (the basis for the upcoming Wolverine movie) is also a good one, but if you want a more mainstream X-Men book, I would recommend Jim Lee's "X-Men" run.

Avengers (or what they will be). They are splitting into two books.

Iron Man

Spider Man

Hulk

Read the civil war storyline (although it has HUGE plot holes because they just miss the mark at thier political comparison entirely) it is pretty interesting.

I would highly reccomend the dark horse conan seires, it is without question the best comic on the market. However they do have the advantage of a character and source material that is a classic hero literature type that was written in a very unique style that many have copied today (batman writers copied the "hero as inevitable force of nature" style of Robert E. Howard). Better yet you could just buy some REH collections, I reccomend any of the conan collections or his boxing stories.

Astonishing X-Men- My favorite x-book at the moment and no crossovers here.
The Eternals- Written by Neil Gaiman the writer of Sandman(slight crossover with Civil War but doesn't really affect the overall story.)

The X-books(Astonishing X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Men,New X-men) are pretty much self contained at the moment.

I started with the X-Men. There's alot of character diversity and conflict. It drew me in so well that i became an avid collector. I stopped a couple of years ago though so I couldn't tell you what's good now. These days I'm just too busy ......Being delicious.
